SkillsUSA 2011 – Day 3

Today is the final day of the competition for all the competitors in all the competitions and the biggest day of hands-on competition around (i.e. if you can only make one day – this is it). In the case of the Team Works competitors, they have until 5 PM to regroup and get everything completed that they can possibly get done. Today I got to turn in the Safety judges vest and work on the Carpentry side of the fence; framing, drywall, windows, trim, siding, & roofing.

Whereas most teams worked fully as a team yesterday doing the main carpentry work, today the team has to split into their 4 main specialty fields – Plumbing, Electrical, Masonry, & Carpentry. While each can work independently, there are numerous times that one can make or lose big chunks of time depending on how they work together. Overall it was a good reflection of how things are in the field and an interesting look at how some of the competitors react under pressure.

That’s all folks – clean it up

Ok seriously, are you kidding me? While I appreciate the laugh (I hope that was done as a joke), you don’t want to know how many points you lost…

Shots of the completed work @ 6 PM when all the judging has been completed and entered. The Technical committee now gets to spend a few hours to crunch all the numbers from all 5 judging categories & the presentation scoring – while I don’t know the final numbers, I do know that teams 2 & 3 were separated by a mere point & a half. From all accounts, this years competitors completed more than any of the previous years competitors & while I can’t speak about last years competition I can say that there work in most cases would put plenty of ” professional ” crews to shame.
