Wacky Weds; Deck ledger & post failure

The answer to last weeks issue – posts were only a few inches in the ground & completely unsupported, add a little frost, water &… good thing it was less than 2′ of the ground. For a little shameless self promotion here is how things should be done…

Leaves one one with a great looking deck that will last

Have you checked out the technical bulletin for LedgerLoK fasteners? Should your fastener pattern be in a “W” as opposed to stacked in pairs?

Ahhh theres always one out there 🙂 — In all honesty thanks for the questions & I am not sure which bulletin you are referring to but I did read through all the available specs & docs before I did decide to go this route (besides talking to a few other trusted deck builders that were using them).

As for the W – technically it is as the specs from what I recall on this deck called out for 1 every 16″ which would have been difficult as the joist spacing is at 12″ OC for the diagonal decking. The main reason the W came into event was because people used to drive 1/2″ lags or drill 1/2″ holes in a straight line which could cause the ledger to split. Based on the size of the fastener & the specs, I am not in the least concerned that would happen here so thus the stack look
