For those involved in “green” building, there is one simple truth – it isn’t about the materials it is about the process and getting the details right. I.E. – it doesn’t matter what materials you use (&/or other items needed for an item to function properly) if they are installed improperly. For many out there though they will hold there no nose up to using certain products – in particular the anti-foam crowd. One particular item they like stating is that oh bugs will eat / tunnel right through that unlike… Well welcome to this weeks group of pictures…
Think this is just some missing insulation… uh oh, nope
Ok so they can tunnel through, but they will never nest in it…
Shoot folks they will even use it for their pantry & dining room…
One more just for fun… I think this was the master bedroom & bath – the opening in this area was bigger than a rugby ball
The simple fact is, no matter if you use cellulose, fiberglass, foam, etc… if rodents, ants, or termites can detect moisture they are going to go after it. Make sure you are using methods to deal with moisture & make sure everything is sealed up properly (mice only need a little hole about a 1/4 of an inch to get into.) If you are in an area popular with pests, well you have to plan for ways to block them including materials with borates or other insecticides in them.
I know a few out there are going, well how about products like Roxul, bugs won’t go through that. Well possibly and that might be fine & good if the house is made up only of that one material but it isn’t – you have wood, drywall & other materials that they can go through or around it… As stated above it is about getting all the details right.
